What does Sankofa mean?

Sankofa is an Adinkra symbol that loosely means "return and get it." It is essentially a symbol that represents the importance of learning from the past. Considering this, it is an appropriate name for this tournament. Versions of Sankofa are pictured to the left. For an excellent summary of the Adinkra symbols, select one of the symbols to the left.

How much does it cost to participate?

What kind of questions will used in the competition?

All of the questions will be short answer questions pertinent to African and African American history. Questions and answers will be provided to all teams once registration is complete.

Who will coach the team?

Teachers, parent volunteers, college/university student volunteers...anyone with a passion for African American history and a willingness to organize and manage practice sessions.

What is the best way to prepare my team?

  1. REGISTER EARLY! The earlier you register, the longer your team has to prepare.
  2. Gather teams of students that express interest in participating.
  3. As this is a team event, teams may assign specific questions to individual team members or study all of the questions as a team - do what is best for your team.
  4. Schedule regular practice sessions to track your team's progress.
  5. Make sure that everyone involved knows the rules.
  6. SUPPORT YOUR TEAM with t-shirts and public recognition (we do this for athletic teams...)

What prizes will be awarded?

ALL participants will receive an award for their participation. Winning team members will receive trophies along with other prizes to celebrate their accomplishments.

When and where will the competition be held?

Late February at Georgia State University.
